How a bedroom project became a global psychedelic rock powerhouse
In short: Kevin Parker didn't start with a stadium tour; he started with home recordings on Myspace. This shift from solitary bedroom production to international acclaim illustrates how digital platforms can launch major musical movements, turning a singular vision into a multi-album discography that defines modern psychedelic rock.
Kevin Parker's project, Tame Impala, originated in Perth in 2007. The transition from a private hobby to a professional career began when Parker's home recordings on Myspace caught the attention of the independent label Modular Recordings. This sparked a bidding war, leading to the band's official signing and the release of their eponymous debut EP in September 2008.
The project's early success was swift. The debut EP reached number 10 on the Australian Singles Chart and appeared on Triple J's Hottest 100 list. This momentum carried into the 2010 release of the first studio album, Innerspeaker. The record achieved international reach, charting in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, while securing Gold certification in Australia and winning 'best-album' honors at the Rolling Stone Awards and J Awards in 2011.
The trajectory continued with the 2012 release of Lonerism, which received 'universal acclaim' and reached the top 40 in multiple countries, including the United States. While its singles saw moderate success—with 'Elephant' peaking at number 8 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart—the album was a critical darling, topping year-end lists for publications like NME and Filter. It also earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
Since then, the discography has expanded through high-profile releases like Currents in 2015 and The Slow Rush in 2020. The project is set to continue its evolution with the fifth studio album, Deadbeat, scheduled for release in October 2025. Beyond Tame Impala, Parker maintains a distinct presence in the industry as a producer for various other artists under his own name.
