From the auto-body shop to the top of Netflix charts
In short: Before becoming a global face of romantic comedies, Taylor Zakhar Perez spent his weekends changing tires at his family's auto-body shop. His journey from a national-level swimmer to a leading man highlights a career built on diverse cultural roots and a commitment to sustainable representation.
Born in Chicago in 1991 and raised in Indiana, Perez's background is a tapestry of Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean heritage, including Croatian and Hungarian ancestry. This diverse lineage informs his public advocacy for Latin representation in the entertainment industry. Before his acting career took off, he was a competitive swimmer who turned down a scholarship to Fordham University to attend UCLA, where he studied Spanish culture and film.
Perez's professional path began in opera houses, performing in musicals at a young age. He spent several years in guest roles on television before achieving a massive breakthrough in 2020 with Netflix's The Kissing Booth 2. To prepare for the role of Marco Valentin Peña, he underwent specific training in guitar and choreography. The film became a massive commercial success, reaching 66 million households within its first month and becoming one of the platform's most-streamed titles.
Beyond his on-screen roles in projects like Minx and Red, White & Royal Blue, Perez has integrated social responsibility into his brand. During the pandemic, he collaborated with a 3D tech company to manufacture face masks that reduced waste by 90%, donating proceeds to a Chicago organization supporting disabled families in the Hispanic community. His recent trajectory includes high-profile partnerships with Lacoste and the talent agency Paradigm, marking his transition into a major global ambassador.
His work often balances commercial appeal with nuanced character work. For his role in Minx, he noted the difficulty of making a character like Shane Brody likable while navigating specific thematic boundaries. This balance of charisma and grounded performance has been cited by critics as a key driver for the success of his recent leading roles.
