The remarkable comeback of a rugby league star after a brain injury
In short: In 2020, Te Maire Martin announced his retirement from professional rugby league, unable to clear medical protocols following a brain bleed. Yet, after two years away from the sport, the New Zealand international defied the odds to return to the NRL.
Born in Tokoroa, New Zealand, Te Maire Martin emerged as a highly decorated talent in the junior ranks. He earned spots as the Holden Cup Team of the Year's five-eighth during both the 2014 and 2015 Wests Tigers campaigns. His early career was marked by clutch performances, including a game-winning field goal for the Junior Kiwis against the Junior Kangaroos in October 2014. His rise began in the Taharoa region, where he played junior football for Turangawaewae before moving to Australia on a scholarship to attend Keebra Park State High School.
As his professional career progressed through clubs like the Penrith Panthers and North Queensland Cowboys, Martin established himself as a versatile playmaker capable of playing five-eighth, fullback, and halfback. However, his trajectory was violently interrupted in April 201s9 when he was diagnosed with a small bleed on the brain. By January 12, 2020, the physical toll became too great; Martin announced his immediate retirement because he could not be cleared for contact training. During his time with the Cowboys, he even played a pivotal role in their 2017 Grand Final appearance, scoring the team's only try in their loss to Melbourne.
The hiatus lasted over two years, but Martin's story did not end with retirement. After joining the Brisbane Broncos on a trial basis in late 2021, he successfully passed a final medical clearance. This allowed him to return to the professional ranks in 2022. Since then, he has continued his career with the New Zealand Warriors, securing multiple contract extensions through 2025, proving his resilience in one of the world's most physically demanding sports.
