From decades of futility to the College Football Playoff
In short: For much of the late 20th century, TCU football struggled through periods of profound decline. Yet, the Horned Frogs have transformed from a struggling underdog into a national powerhouse, recently reaching the national championship game and becoming one of the few teams to play in every College Football Playoff Bowl.
The program's history is marked by extreme fluctuations. After early success in the early 20th century, including a 1920 TIAA conference title and a 1935 national championship shared with LSU, the team entered a period of significant decline. Between 1974 and 1982, the Horned Frogs won only 14 games out of 89, a stretch of futility matched only by Northwestern among major power conference teams at the time.
The program's modern resurgence began under head coach Dennis Franchione (1998–2000), who led the team to its first bowl win and AP poll appearance since the 1950s. This momentum continued under Gary Patterson (2001–2021), who oversaw ten seasons with at least 11 wins, including a perfect 2010 season and a share of the 2014 Big 12 championship.
The most recent era of excellence arrived under Sonny Dykes in 2022. Dykes led the Horned Frogs to their first College Football Playoff berth, where they defeated Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal before ultimately losing to Georgia in the national championship game. Today, TCU stands as one of only four FBS teams to have participated in all six College Football Playoff Bowls, winning all except the Orange Bowl.
This trajectory from the bottom of the standings to the pinnacle of the sport highlights a remarkable institutional turnaround. While the program has faced significant hurdles, including severe NCAA penalties in the mid-1980s, it has re-established itself as a major force in the Big 12 Conference.
