The rare phenomenon of twins competing against each other in Major League Baseball
In short: In 2022, a historical rarity unfolded on a baseball diamond. While most siblings share a career, Taylor and Tyler Rogers achieved something far more difficult: facing off as opponents in the same Major League game, marking a singular moment in professional sports history.
The Rogers brothers, Taylor and Tyler, represent a rare biological and professional coincidence. Born in Denver, Colorado, on December 17, 1990, the pair are mirror-image twins, with Tyler arriving just 30 seconds after Taylor. While both reached the pinnacle of professional baseball, their paths converged in a way few siblings ever experience.
On August 27, 2019, the brothers joined an elite group as only the tenth set of twins to play in MLB history. This occurred while Taylor was pitching for the Minnesota Twins and Tyler made his debut for the San Francisco Giants. However, their most significant statistical milestone arrived on April 11, 2022. On that day, they became the fifth set of twins to appear in the same MLB game. This specific matchup was also historically significant: it was only the second time in history that twins had pitched in the same game, and the very first time they had done so while playing for opposing teams.
Taylor’s career has been defined by high-leverage roles and frequent movement across the league. An MLB All-Star in 2021, his journey has seen him pitch for the Twins, Padres, Brewers, Giants, Reds, and Cubs. His versatility is evidenced by his ability to serve as both a setup man and a closer, even recording 30 saves in 2019. Despite the frequent trades and roster changes, the Rogers brothers remain a unique chapter in the annals of Major League Baseball history.
