How a teenage tragedy birthed one of Australia's heaviest metalcore bands
In short: In 2003, two high school friends in Queensland formed a band to process the sudden death of a close friend. What began as a way to navigate grief through music evolved into a global metalcore force known for its raw, unflinching honesty.
The Amity Affliction was born in Gympie, Queensland, when Ahren Stringer and Troy Brady formed the group during their final year of high school. The band's name carries a heavy weight: 'Amity' honors the friendship of a peer who died in a car accident at age 17, while 'Affliction' represents the struggle of coping with that loss. This foundation of vulnerability would define their entire discography. The group's early years were spent performing at school events and during lunch breaks. Their first official demo arrived in 2004, produced at Aisle 6 Recording.
Over the decades, the band's lineup has undergone significant shifts, yet their lyrical themes have remained remarkably consistent. Led by vocalist Joel Birch, the band's songs frequently confront intense personal subjects, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. This transparency has helped them achieve massive commercial success, including multiple number one albums on the Australian ARIA charts, such as 2010's 'Youngbloods' and 2014's 'Let the Ocean Take Me'. The band's discography has expanded to nine studio albums, with their most recent work, House of Cards, arriving in 2026. Their 2015 single 'Shine On' even reached the top five on the Australian iTunes charts.
Their journey has not been without controversy or hardship. The 2012 release of 'Chasing Ghosts' sparked social media backlash due to its graphic cover art depicting a suicide. Despite the controversy, the band maintained that the album's core message was anti-suicide, urging fans to seek help. The band has also navigated significant internal changes, including the departure of long-time members and the challenges of touring through personal health crises, all while maintaining their status as a pillar of the Australian heavy music scene. The group's history includes significant touring, such as the 2011 'Fuck the Reaper' tour. They even faced sudden lineup changes when drummer Ryan Burt left the group in 2018 due to mental health struggles.
