A clumsy witch and her cursed cat teacher navigate a prestigious magic academy
In short: Spica Virgo dreams of attending the elite Royal Diana Academy, but her lack of skill stands in the way. Her life changes when she encounters a talking black cat—a cursed wizard named Claude Sirius. By unlocking her rare Rebirth Magic, Spica begins an unconventional apprenticeship to master the arcane arts.
The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch, created by Yōsuke Kaneda, debuted on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform in March 2022. The narrative centers on Spica, a student from a large family who possesses the unique ability to manipulate plant life and wield Rebirth Magic. Her journey is inextricably linked to Claude Sirius, a former teacher at the prestigious Royal Diana Academy who was transformed into a cat by a mysterious curse. Spica’s discovery that she can temporarily restore Claude’s human form through a highly unconventional method allows her to secure a place at the academy, where Claude serves as her mentor despite his lingering feline state.
The academy is home to a diverse coven of twelve students, each representing a distinct magical archetype. These characters range from Aria Aquarius, a water-manipulating prodigy, to Ewe, an Aries mage capable of high-level fire spells, and the Gemini twins, Castor and Pollux, who share a single body. The group is led by Capella Capricorn, a perfectionist strategist who balances her formidable magical dispelling abilities with martial arts prowess. Each student brings unique challenges to the classroom, from the psychic awareness of Astraea Libra to the poison-manipulation skills of Hana, a student from the Eastern Lands.
The series expanded beyond its manga origins with an anime adaptation produced by Liden Films, which aired in 2026. Directed by Naoyuki Tatsuwa, the television series spanned two consecutive cours, featuring themes from artists like Asca and Akari Nanawo. While the manga has been compiled into 15 volumes as of July 2026, the story continues to explore the complex dynamics between Spica and her classmates as they navigate the rigorous expectations of the Royal Diana Academy. The central mystery remains the nature of the curse placed upon Claude and the looming threat posed by the Black Serpents, who view Spica’s rare magical potential as a significant point of contention.
