In short: Set at the turn of the 20th century, The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures transports the iconic courtroom battle series to the Meiji period. By blending historical atmosphere with innovative mechanics like the Dance of Deduction, the game challenges players to correct a brilliant but flawed detective to uncover the truth.

Developed by Capcom and directed by Shu Takumi, The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures serves as a prequel to the main series, following Ryunosuke Naruhodo, an ancestor of Phoenix Wright. The narrative unfolds across Japan and Victorian-era Britain, capturing a time when the legal profession was still a nascent concept in Japan. Takumi aimed to reflect this cultural shift toward the West, carefully balancing period-appropriate dialogue to avoid sounding overly modern or archaic. The protagonist’s journey begins in Japan, where he is accused of murder, before traveling to London to further his legal studies and eventually teaming up with the eccentric detective Herlock Sholmes.

The game introduces distinct gameplay systems that deviate from traditional series norms. The Dance of Deduction requires players to examine crime scenes and witness behavior to rectify Sholmes’ rapid-fire, often incorrect conclusions. During trials, the new Summation Examination mechanic forces players to navigate a British-style jury system, where they must identify contradictions between juror statements to sway a unanimous guilty verdict. These mechanics are supported by fully 3D environments and character models, utilizing motion capture to enhance the dynamic animations that define the series' visual identity.

The production faced significant challenges, particularly regarding localization and the creation of a unique musical identity. Composer Yasumasa Kitagawa utilized a live orchestra with a focus on string and wind instruments, incorporating Spanish elements to differentiate the soundscape from previous electronic-heavy entries. Although initially released in Japan in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS, the title remained unavailable in the West for years due to complex localization hurdles. It was eventually brought to global audiences in 2021 through The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, a compilation that unified the duology and provided players with an accessible way to experience this historical mystery.

The game’s aesthetic was meticulously crafted by Kazuya Nuri, who designed characters to look like illustrations while maintaining enough realism for expressive animation. From the dark, vampire-inspired aura of prosecutor Barok van Zieks to the simple, recognizable silhouette of Ryunosuke, every design choice aimed to convey depth within the constraints of the era. By merging these artistic goals with a narrative that explores the collision of Eastern and Western legal traditions, the game successfully established a distinct identity separate from the main Ace Attorney series.
