In short: The Great American Bash isn't just one show; it’s a sprawling piece of wrestling history that has survived corporate buyouts, brand splits, and name changes. Originally conceived as a regional spectacle by Dusty Rhodes, it evolved into a multi-city tour before becoming the modern cornerstone for developmental talent.

Dusty Rhodes, an NWA booker and wrestler, launched The Great American Bash on July 6, 1985, within Charlotte's American Legion Memorial Stadium. Produced by Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP), the inaugural event featured a one-hour live concert by David Allan Coe. While it began as a closed-circuit television attraction, it transitioned to pay-per-view (PPV) in 1988, just before JCP was rebranded as World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

The mid-1980s saw the event expand into massive summer tours. In 1986, JCP held 13 separate 'Bash' shows across cities like Philadelphia, Memphis, and Atlanta, featuring NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair defending his title at every stop. By 1987, the tour was condensed to three events and served as the debut for Rhodes' 'WarGames: The Match Beyond.' This era also marked a significant expansion of JCP’s reach, incorporating stars from the UWF and Championship Wrestling from Florida.

The event's lineage became complex following the 2001 purchase of WCW by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which later became WWE. WWE revived the brand in 2004 as an annual PPV, initially exclusive to the SmackDown! roster until 2007. After a period of rebranding as 'The Bash' and eventually being replaced by Fatal 4-Way in 2010, it returned in 2012 as a television special. Today, it serves as a primary vehicle for WWE’s developmental brand, NXT, alternating between television specials and premium live events on platforms like Peacock and Netflix.

The event is set to enter a new era of distribution; following the end of a contract with Peacock in March 2026, WWE announced a multi-year deal starting with the 2026 Great American Bash. This move will see NXT's premium live events air on The CW in the United States, while international fans will continue to access the content via platforms like Netflix and Abema.
