Ancient footprints on a British beach reveal humans walked here 900,000 years ago
In short: In May 2013, a storm on a Norfolk beach exposed a series of mysterious hollows in the mud. These fleeting impressions, which vanished into the tide within weeks, turned out to be the oldest human footprints ever discovered outside of Africa, offering a rare glimpse into our distant ancestors.
The discovery occurred at Happisburgh, a site in Norfolk, England, known for its rapidly eroding coastline. While investigating hardened sediments at the base of a cliff, archaeologist Martin Bates noticed unusual indentations. Subsequent analysis by a team led by Nicholas Ashton confirmed these were not mere geological anomalies but a trail of hominid footprints dating back approximately 900,000 years to the early Pleistocene.
Because the site was vulnerable to the relentless North Sea tides, researchers faced a race against time. They spent two weeks capturing high-resolution photographs of the impressions before the ocean destroyed them entirely by the end of May 2013. By stitching these images into 3D digital models, the team could perform precise measurements, revealing that a group of five individuals—a mix of adults and children—had walked along an ancient river estuary.
The footprints provide significant insights into the physical stature of these early humans, with height estimates ranging from 90 to 170 centimetres. Based on the age of the sediment and the known distribution of hominid species in Europe at the time, researchers suggest the tracks were likely left by Homo antecessor, also known as 'Pioneer Man.' These individuals were smaller-brained than modern humans but walked upright on two legs.
While these prints represent the earliest evidence of human presence in Britain, they also hold global significance as the oldest hominid tracks found outside the African cradle of humanity. The find highlights the importance of Happisburgh as a critical archaeological site, where dramatic coastal erosion continues to expose, and simultaneously threaten, the secrets of our deep past.
