A historic first for groups on the American Masked Singer
In short: In season 12, the American edition of The Masked Singer witnessed a major milestone. For the first time in the show's history, a musical group secured the championship title, breaking a long-standing trend of solo winners and changing the competitive landscape of the hit Fox series.
Fox aired season 12 of The Masked Singer from September 25, 2024, until December 18, 2024. This season featured 15 contestants divided into three groups of five. Notably, it was the first season since the seventh season to exclude Wild Card contestants or individuals joining the competition later than the rest of the field.
The competition saw a historic outcome when the R&B group Boyz II Men, performing as the 'Buffalos', became the first group ever to win the American edition of the series. They narrowly defeated singer Mario, who performed as 'Wasp', to claim the title. The season also utilized the 'Ding Dong Keep It On' bell, a mechanic from previous seasons that allowed the panel to save one contestant from elimination during the three group finals.
The production featured a returning panel consisting of Nick Cannon, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora. While the core group remained intact, Ora was absent during the eleventh episode due to illness. The season was characterized by various themed nights, including 'Barbie Night', '60s Night', 'Sports Night', 'Miley Cyrus Night', and 'Footloose Night'.
The season also included several high-profile guest appearances. William Shatner appeared in the first episode, followed by Kevin Bacon in the second. Other notable guests included Joel McHale and Nikki Glaser in the fourth episode, and the Peanuts gang during the ninth episode. The finale featured appearances by season five winner Nick Lachey, as well as Gloria Loring and Taika Waititi in the audience.
