A web novel contest entry evolved into a massive Japanese media franchise about demons
In short: The Ogre's Bride began as a simple submission for a romance writing contest. Today, this story of a high school girl navigating a world where humans and demons coexist has expanded into a successful light novel series, a prize-winning manga, a live-action film, and a television anime series.
The series originated in 2019 when author Kureha entered the Novema! Character Short Story Contest. Inspired by the specific image of a character declaring, I've found my bride, the story won an Excellence Award and was subsequently published by Starts Publishing in October 2020. The narrative centers on Yuzu Shinonome, a neglected high school student who finds herself entangled with Kiryuuin Reiya, the powerful head of the Kiryuuin clan, after being mistreated by her family and a rival fox spirit.
Central to the story is the complex social hierarchy of the ayakashi, or demon spirits. Reiya is depicted as a ruthless but charismatic figure who shows genuine affection only for Yuzu. This dynamic is contrasted with the immature and selfish behavior of Yuzu's sister, Karin, who serves as the bride to the fox spirit Yota. The author intentionally limits Reiya's displays of affection, aiming to portray a form of love that remains considerate rather than overbearing or pushy.
The franchise has seen significant growth since its inception. A manga adaptation by Jun Togashi launched in December 2021, winning the grand prize at the 2023 NTT Solmare Digital Comic Awards. By 2026, the series reached new heights with a live-action film directed by Chihiro Ikeda premiering in March, followed by an anime television series produced by Colored Pencil Animation Japan that aired from July to September. These adaptations have solidified the story's place in modern Japanese pop culture, exploring themes of resilience and belonging within a supernatural setting.
