In short: Imagine a murder mystery where the set falls apart, actors forget lines, and someone accidentally drinks white spirit instead of whisky. This isn't just bad acting; it is a meticulously crafted chaos that has become one of the longest-running hits in West End history.

Created by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of the Misch mischief Theatre Company, *The Play That Goes Wrong* centers on the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society. The troupe attempts to stage *The Murder at Haversham Manor*, a 1920s-style mystery, but the production is plagued by technical disasters. The mayhem includes sticking doors, collapsing platforms, and even a cast member being knocked unconscious, only to be replaced by a technician who refuses to yield the stage.

The play's success is rooted in its high-energy physical comedy and technical precision. Since its 2012 premiere at London's Old Red Lion Theatre, it has expanded globally, with productions in over 30 countries including China, Brazil, and South Korea. It achieved significant critical acclaim, winning Best New Comedy at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards. Notably, the Broadway production, which opened in April 2017, featured film director J.J. Abrams as a producer.

The production's longevity is remarkable. Since moving to the Duchess Theatre on 14 September 2014, it has become the theatre's longest-running play since the venue opened in 1929. The momentum has continued well into the decade, with a booking extension announced in September 2026 to run through 31 January 2028. Beyond the stage, the creators' brand of chaos transitioned to television with *The Goes Wrong Show*, which drew an average of 2.2 million viewers per episode during its 2019 broadcast.
