In short: What happens when a modern-day office worker is transported to a magical realm? Instead of becoming a hero, Seiichirou Kondou is recruited for a job in the royal accounting department. This light novel explores the intersection of grueling corporate work ethics and high-fantasy world-building.

The series, titled Isekai no Sata wa Shachiku Shidai (The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter), began as a user-generated novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website between March and December 2018. Following the work of Kikka Ohashi on illustrations and Yatsuki Wakatsu on the prose, Enterbrain began releasing the title as a commercial light novel in February 2019. By November 2024, the series had reached over 1.4 million copies in circulation. The narrative follows Seiichirou Kondou, a Japanese accountant who accidentally enters a portal with a teenage girl, Yua Shiraishi. While Yua is summoned to be the kingdom's Holy Maiden—the only person capable of purifying a deadly miasma—Seiichirou is granted a position in the royal accounting department.

The story highlights the friction between Yua's desire to save the kingdom and Seiichirou's pragmatic concerns that the kingdom might be exploiting her for their own gain. The series has expanded into multiple media formats, including a manga adaptation by Kazuki Irodori and an anime television series produced by Studio Deen. The anime, which aired from January to March 2026, was directed by Shinji Ishihara. The work has gained international reach, with licensing by Yen Press in North America and Muse Communication in Southeast Asia. It serves as a unique cultural export that blends the 'isekai' genre with the specific social pressures of Japanese corporate life.
