Can a 32-year-old rookie truly be the world's most powerful adventurer?
In short: In a fantasy world where most adventurers begin in their teens, Rick Gladiator is an anomaly. After years of brutal, near-fatal training under the continent's strongest party, this former guild clerk enters the fray as an F-rank novice, possessing power that shatters testing equipment and humbles elite nobles.
The story of Rick Gladiator, the protagonist of Kiraku Kishima's light novel series, centers on a profound disconnect between perceived and actual ability. At age 30, Rick abandoned his stable position as a guild receptionist to pursue a dream of defeating the legendary monster Kaiser Alsapiet. To prepare, he underwent two years of intense, life-threatening training under Orichalcum Fist, the world's premier S-rank party. This group includes formidable figures like Broughston Ashorc, a warrior-monk orc known as 'The Sage Beast,' and Mizett Eldwarf, a master craftsman over 50 years old.
Despite acquiring S-rank combat capabilities, Rick suffers from severe imposter syndrome. Because his training was conducted by god-like mentors—including the ten-year-old vampire mage Alicerette Draqul—he genuinely believes he is weak. When he finally takes his registration exam at age 32, his immense strength accidentally destroys the guild's testing equipment, yet he remains oblivious to the fact that he is far more powerful than the average F-rank adventurer.
The series, which began its life on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website before moving to Kakuyomu in June 2018, has expanded into a significant multimedia franchise. Under the Hobby Japan imprint, the light novel has reached seventeen volumes as of February 2026. The narrative follows Rick as he navigates low-level chores and high-stakes tournaments, often accompanied by his assistant, the half-dark elf Reanette Elfelt, while inadvertently challenging the world's highest-ranking elites.
