A decade of conflict: the long-running saga of The Qwaser of Stigmata
In short: From its 2006 debut to its 2016 conclusion, this intense manga series weaves a complex web of persecution, hidden powers, and international icons. Discover the timeline of a story that transitioned from the pages of Champion Red to global anime broadcasts.
Created by writer Hiroyuki Yoshino and illustrator Kenetsu Satō, The Qwaser of Stigmata began its serialization in Akita Shoten's magazine, Champion Red, on August 19, 2006. The manga's journey spanned nearly ten years, finally concluding on July 9, 2016. During its run, the series was collected into 24 tankōbon volumes, which were released between December 20, 2006, and September 20, 2016. The publication of these individual volumes followed the initial serialization, spanning a period of roughly nine and a half years.
The narrative centers on the lives of students Mafuyu Oribe and Tomo Yamanobe at the St. Mihailov Academy, a Japanese Eastern Orthodox school. Their lives are upended when they encounter the Russian-born Alexander "Sasha" Nikolaevich Hell. The plot involves deep-seated tensions, including the persecution of the protagonists by students led by Miyuri Tsujidou and Hana Katsuragi, and a larger conflict involving the Adepts, who seek the Theotokos of Tsarytsin icon. The central conflict is driven by the Adepts' willingness to turn the academy into a battlefield to obtain the sacred icon. This struggle is complicated by Athos, who intends to keep the icon's very existence a secret from the public.
The franchise expanded significantly into animation. A 24-episode television series aired from January to June 2010, followed by an OVA titled Portrait of the Empress in October 2010. A second season, consisting of 12 episodes, broadcast in 2011. While the anime faced censorship on Biglobe, uncensored versions were available via streaming on Anime Network. In North America, the series saw various releases, including English subtitled DVDs from Sentai Filmworks in 2012 and 2013, and early manga volumes published by Tokyopop. The musical landscape of the series includes an original soundtrack by Tatsuya Kato, released on June 7, 2010. Additionally, Lantis produced an internet radio program featuring the voices of Aki Toyosaki and Yōko Hikasa.
