Two American gunships vanished in a violent storm, remaining perfectly preserved for two centuries.
In short: In the depths of Lake Ontario lie the Hamilton and the Scourge, two American gunships that sank during the War of 1812. This documentary follows a team of experts attempting to explore these remarkably intact wrecks to uncover the truth behind a tragedy that claimed over 80 lives.
On August 8, 1813, the Hamilton and the Scourge disappeared during a sudden summer storm while fighting for control of the Great Lakes. The vessels sank rapidly, and because no navy inquest was ever conducted, the exact circumstances of the disaster have remained a mystery for nearly 200 years.
The investigation relies on the account of Ned Myers, the only known survivor to provide an eyewitness testimony of the event. By combining this historical record with modern marine engineering and archaeology, the team seeks to understand how these ships were lost and why the casualty count was so high.
