In short: On November 10, 1975, the massive freighter Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared during a violent storm, taking 29 men to the bottom of Lake Superior. Despite its fame and the subsequent search, the exact cause of the sinking remains a haunting mystery, fueling decades of debate and a legendary folk ballad.

Commissioned by the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1957, the Edmund Fitzgerald was designed to be the largest ship on the Great Lakes. Measuring 729 feet long and weighing over 13,600 tons, the vessel was a powerhouse of mid-century maritime engineering. Launched in 1958, it quickly earned nicknames like the Big Fitz and became a favorite among boat enthusiasts for its record-breaking performance and luxurious interior, which featured air-conditioned quarters and deep-pile carpeting.

The final voyage began on November 9, 1975, as the ship departed Superior, Wisconsin, for a Detroit steel mill. By the next day, it faced a brutal storm with winds reaching 75 knots and waves swelling to 25 feet. Captain Ernest M. McSorley reported that the ship was listing and had sustained minor damage, but at 7:10 pm, he radioed that they were holding their own. Moments later, the ship vanished from radar, less than 20 miles from the safety of Whitefish Bay.

The Coast Guard’s 1977 report suggested that improperly closed hatches allowed water to flood the ship, causing it to lose buoyancy and dive to the lake bottom. However, this theory is heavily contested. Other experts have proposed that the ship struck a shoal near Caribou Island, suffered from structural failures, or was overwhelmed by rogue waves. Because the wreckage lies 530 feet deep in two mangled, separated pieces, no definitive conclusion has ever been reached, leaving the tragedy as one of the most enduring enigmas in shipping history.
