Rare Skeleton Discovery at Waterloo Battlefield Challenges Historical Accounts of Soldier Burials
In short: Archaeologists have unearthed a remarkably rare human skeleton at the site of the Battle of Waterloo. This discovery, alongside horse remains and amputated limbs, provides a visceral look at the brutal reality of the 1815 conflict and sheds light on what happened to the fallen.
In July 2022, the charity Waterloo Uncovered began excavations at the Mont-Saint-Jean farm, which served as a field hospital during the battle. The discovery of these remains is significant because it contradicts the prevailing historical narrative that most bodies from the battlefield were exhumed shortly after the fighting to be processed into fertilizer.
Beyond the human remains, the team is documenting the site of the famous 'reverse slope,' where ongoing work by metal-detectorists has yielded musket balls and uniform fragments. These findings offer a more complete picture of the Napoleonic conflict, moving beyond abstract history to reveal the physical toll of the fighting.
