The wide receiver who defied a coach's prejudice to become a legend
In short: When Tim Brown arrived at the Raiders, he was told the owner harbored deep suspicions about players from Notre Dame. Yet, the man who would become the franchise's all-time leader in games played didn't just overcome those biases—he rewrote the NFL record books.
Tim Brown’s professional journey was marked by both unprecedented individual excellence and complex institutional friction. Entering the NFL in 1988 as the sixth overall pick, Brown achieved several historic milestones, including becoming the first 'pure' wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy during his tenure at Notre Dame. His professional career was defined by remarkable consistency; he recorded nine consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 1993 to 2001 and holds the NFL record for 10 consecutive seasons with at least 75 receptions.
Despite his legendary status with the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders, Brown’s relationship with the organization and its late owner, Al Davis, was fraught. Brown later revealed that shortly after his first practice, he was informed that Davis held prejudices against African-American athletes from Notre Dame, fearing they would prioritize education over athletic commitment. This tension persisted for years, evidenced by an incident in 2000 where Brown felt unable to even greet Davis in an Oakland restaurant.
Brown's statistical legacy is nearly peerless. At the time of his retirement in 2005, he ranked second in NFL history for receiving yards with 14,934 and third in receptions with 1,094. He remains the only player to retire in the top five of both receiving and return yards. Beyond the field, Brown’s influence extends to leadership roles, including serving as the commissioner of The Arena League, a position he held as of 2023.
