From NFL quarterback to ESPN analyst: the dual career of Tim Hasselbeck
In short: Before becoming a familiar voice on ESPN, Tim Hasselbeck navigated the high-stakes world of professional football. His journey took him from a standout collegiate career at Boston College through eight seasons in the NFL, proving that success on the field can pave the way for a new life in the broadcast booth.
At Massachusetts' Xaverian Brothers High School, Tim Hasselbeck's football career gained major traction; he received USA Today All-America status and was selected Player of the Year by the Boston Herald and Boston Globe. This success transitioned into a notable collegiate career at Boston College from 1996 through 2000. During his time with the Eagles, he achieved several milestones, including throwing the longest touchdown pass in school history—a 97-yarder to Dedrick Dewalt on November 26, 1999.
His professional career in the National Football League spanned eight seasons. Hasselbeck's professional career included stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, and New York Giants. He also played for the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe. While his time as a starter included a notable performance for the Redskins in December 2003, where he led a 20–7 victory over the Giants, he also experienced the extremes of the sport, such as recording a 0.0 single-game passer rating against the Dallas Cowboys.
Hasselbeck’s transition to media was remarkably swift. In June 2007, he participated in the first annual 'Broadcast Boot Camp' at NFL Films. By September 23, 2007, he made his television debut announcing an Arizona Cardinals-Baltimore Ravens game for NFL on Fox. After a long tenure as a sports analyst for ESPN, Hasselbeck announced in December 2023 that he would be leaving the network to pursue coaching, eventually being named the head varsity football coach at Ensworth High School in Nashville, Tennessee.
