From unranked recruit to NBA all-time leader in turnover efficiency
In short: He wasn't a blue-chip prospect. In 2010, Tim Hardaway Jr. was largely overlooked by major recruiters. Yet, through a standout collegiate career at Michigan and a steady professional ascent, he transformed from an unranked underdog into a player holding a historic NBA statistical distinction.
The journey of Timothy Duane Hardaway Jr. began far from the spotlight of top-tier recruiting lists. During his high school years at Miami Palmetto, he even spent a year playing football before committing to basketball. When he arrived at the University of Michigan, he was not ranked among the Rivals.com Top-150, and his recruitment primarily consisted of mail correspondence with the coaching staff.
His ascent was marked by periods of intense brilliance and significant struggle. During his 2010–11 freshman season, Hardaway experienced a notable shooting slump, at one point going 13 consecutive games without achieving 50% field goal accuracy. However, he rebounded to lead the Wolverines in scoring, steals, and three-point percentage, eventually earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors four times and setting a school freshman record with 74 three-pointers.
Hardaway's professional career saw him drafted 24th overall by the New York Knicks in 2013, following a junior season where Michigan reached the national runner-up position. His professional journey has involved stints with various NBA teams, such as the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, and Atlanta Hawks. Beyond his scoring prowess, he has achieved a rare level of efficiency; as of the 2025–26 season, he is the NBA all-time career leader in the lowest turnover percentage.
The legacy of his career is intertwined with basketball royalty. As the son of Hall of Famer Tim Hardaway, he joined his father in the ranks of first-round NBA draft picks. While his path was occasionally complicated by injuries and shooting slumps, his ability to maintain elite ball security while playing high-stakes professional basketball has cemented his place in the league's statistical history.
