From undefeated championship runs to the helm of major college football programs
In short: Tim Albin’s coaching career is defined by dramatic turnarounds and championship trophies. After leading Northwestern Oklahoma State to a perfect season, he spent years building prolific offenses at Ohio University before securing a MAC title and a new head coaching role at Charlotte.
Tim Albin's ascent in college football is marked by a remarkable streak of success at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Serving as head coach from 1997 to 1999, Albin oversaw a rapid program improvement, moving from a 5–5 record in 1997 to an undefeated 13–0 season in 1999. This perfect run culminated in a NAIA National Championship, earning Albin the NAIA Coach of the Year title from both Rawlings and American Football Coach Magazine. He was previously inducted into the Northwestern Oklahoma State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. His players during this era included NFL talents like Patrick Crayton and Ron Moore.
Following his success at the NAIA level, Albin transitioned through various roles at Nebraska and North Dakota State before joining Frank Solich at Ohio University in 2005. During a long tenure as offensive coordinator, Albin developed numerous players for the NFL and CFL, including wide receiver Taylor Price and quarterback Nathan Rourke. His offensive expertise was recognized in 2018 when he was named the FootballScoop Running Backs coach of the year. He also served as a graduate assistant at Northeastern State. During his time at Nebraska, he worked specifically with tight ends.
Albin's leadership reached a new peak when he was appointed head coach at Ohio in July 2021 following Solich's unexpected retirement. After a transitional 3–5 season, he orchestrated a significant turnaround, leading the Bobcats to a MAC East title in 2022 and a MAC Championship victory in 2024. This 38–3 victory over Miami marked Ohio's first MAC Championship since 1968, leading Albin to his next role as the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in December 2024. In 2022, the team ended a losing streak by winning the Arizona Bowl against Wyoming. His tenure at Ohio included multiple nine-win regular seasons.
