In short: Tim Lambesis built a career as a prominent figure in heavy metal, but his legacy is defined by a violent criminal plot. In 2013, the As I Lay Dying vocalist was caught attempting to pay an undercover officer to murder his wife, leading to a prison sentence and a fractured musical career.

In May 2013, Timothy Peter Lambesis was arrested in Oceanside, California, for soliciting the murder of his estranged wife, Meggan Murphy. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Lambesis approached an undercover detective at a gym, offering $1,000 for expenses and $20,000 for the hit. He provided the agent with his wife's address and a gate code, all while attempting to establish an alibi by being with his children during the planned crime.

The legal fallout was swift. While his defense attorney argued that Lambesis' thought processes were severely impacted by steroid use, the singer eventually changed his plea to guilty in early 2014. He was sentenced to six years in prison, though he was released on parole in December 2016. During his legal troubles, Lambesis' religious identity also underwent a public shift; once a vocal Christian who claimed his faith inspired his lyrics, he later renounced his beliefs, citing theological doubts and personal struggles.

Lambesis' return to music has been marked by significant instability. After resurrecting his band, As I Lay Dying, in 2017, the group faced a total exodus of members in October 2024. While Lambesis attributed the departure to an unhealthy environment he had created, former bandmates and subsequent reports suggested the split was triggered by allegations of domestic abuse. Despite these controversies and a 2025 petition regarding alleged animal abuse, Lambesis has vowed to continue his musical projects.
