How Tim Pütz became a history-making force in professional doubles tennis
In short: Born in 1987, German tennis professional Tim Pütz has evolved from a singles qualifier into a world-class doubles specialist. By securing the 2024 ATP Finals title, he and partner Kevin Krawietz cemented their place in history as the first all-German pair to claim the prestigious championship.
Tim Pütz began his professional journey with a focus on singles, notably making his main-draw debut at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships. However, his career trajectory shifted significantly as he leaned into doubles competition. His rise through the rankings was marked by strategic partnerships and consistent performance at major tournaments. By November 2021, following his victory at the Paris Masters with Michael Venus, Pütz broke into the top 20, eventually reaching a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 6 in February 2025.
The partnership with Kevin Krawietz has proven particularly fruitful for Pütz. Together, they have navigated the highest levels of the sport, including reaching the 2024 US Open final and the quarterfinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their crowning achievement came at the 2024 ATP Finals. Entering as the eighth seeds, they defied expectations to reach the final, where they secured a straight-sets victory against Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić. This win established them as the first all-German duo to win the ATP Finals, a milestone that underscores their impact on the modern game.
Beyond his success with Krawietz, Pütz has demonstrated versatility across different formats. He claimed his first Grand Slam title in 2023 at the French Open, competing in the mixed doubles category alongside Miyu Kato. His commitment to national representation has also been a constant, having played for Germany in the Davis Cup since 2017. Whether navigating the clay courts of Roland Garros or the hard courts of the ATP Tour, Pütz has established himself as a formidable presence, balancing Grand Slam success with sustained excellence on the professional circuit.
