In short: Between 2000 and 2002, Sky One aired a surreal comedy centered on a temperamental landlord. This wasn't a place for casual drinkers, but a chaotic hub of neurotics, accidental criminals, and bizarre regulars, all revolving around a man desperately clinging to an outdated version of Britain.

Time Gentlemen Please is a British sitcom written by Richard Herring and Al Murray that aired on Sky One from 2000 to 2002. The series centers on the "Guv" (the Governor), a tenant landlord with deeply old-fashioned and often politically incorrect views. He is an evolution of Murray's "The Pub Landlord" stage persona, which he had been performing in stand-up since 1994. The landlord is depicted as a neurotic man with abandonment issues, following a divorce where his wife moved to France with their son.

The pub's staff and regulars provide a landscape of absurdity. Steve Crosby, the long-term barman, lives in the cellar and has accumulated tens of thousands of pounds in debt due to his extreme clumsiness. Janet Wilson, an Australian backpacker, faces a Catch 22 as the landlord avoids paying her wages. The cast also includes Connie, a student who is revealed to have been a lap dancer, and "Prof" (Algernon McCoy), a character who leads a double life as a serial killer and a railway station flasher.

The show's humor often stems from the tension between the characters' delusions and reality. For instance, Leslie and Lesley, a biker couple, believe their drinks never empty due to a mechanical contraption used by the Guv to avoid confrontation. Meanwhile, the brewery representative Ms. Jackson attempts to modernize the establishment, often to the Guv's chagrin. The series explores a microcosm of social friction, from the Guv's rivalry with Greg Thompson to the complicated family revelation that "Uncle" Barry is actually the Guv's father.
