How a Vienna-based tennis professional navigated a rapid rise through the global rankings
In short: Aleksandr Shevchenko has spent most of his life in Austria, yet his professional journey is defined by a recent shift in national allegiance. From his early Challenger circuit victories to breaking into the world top 50, the Kazakhstani player has rapidly climbed the ranks of international professional tennis.
Born in November 2000, Aleksandr Shevchenko has resided in Vienna since he was nine years old. His professional ascent began in earnest during 2022, a year marked by his debut on the ATP Tour and his first Challenger title at the Bratislava Open. By September of that year, he had secured a position within the top 150 players globally. His momentum continued into 2023, where he made his first appearances at all four Grand Slam tournaments and several Masters 1000 events, including the Madrid Open and the Italian Open.
The 2023 season proved to be a breakthrough period for the athlete. At the Swiss Indoors, he achieved his first victory against a top-10 opponent, defeating Taylor Fritz in a grueling three-hour match that featured three tiebreaks. Shortly after, he reached his first ATP final in Metz, becoming the youngest finalist at that tournament since 2016. These performances propelled him into the top 50 rankings for the first time. In early 2024, he officially transitioned his sporting citizenship from Russia to Kazakhstan, a change that took effect during the tournament in Montpellier.
Beyond the court, Shevchenko's personal life drew public attention during this period of professional growth. He married fellow tennis player Anastasia Potapova in December 2023, though reports confirmed the couple had divorced by September 2024. Currently, Shevchenko maintains a career-best singles position of world number 45, a milestone reached in February 2024. As he continues his career, he remains the second-highest ranked player representing Kazakhstan, balancing his long-term residence in Austria with the demands of the global professional tennis circuit.
