In short: Once a thriving cultural hub and the heart of Spain's silk industry, Toledo lost its political primacy to Madrid in 1561. While it survived as a manufacturing center for centuries, the city eventually pivoted toward a bureaucratic and tourism-based economy, leaving behind a complex legacy of religious and social transformation.

Toledo’s early modern trajectory was defined by its transition from a royal residence to a provincial city. In the 16th century, the city experienced a significant population surge, growing from 31,930 in 1528 to 56,270 by 1561. This period was marked by the presence of Charles V, who chose the city as his residence at least 15 times starting in 1525. However, the move of the royal court to Madrid in 1561 signaled the beginning of a shift in political gravity, though the city’s archbishops remained influential political and religious brokers throughout the Ancien Régime.

Economic life in Toledo was anchored by the silk industry, which reached its zenith in the 16th century before entering a protracted decline. By the turn of the 19th century, this once-vital trade had disappeared. The city also faced significant social upheaval, particularly with the arrival of 6,000 deported Moriscos from Granada following the Alpujarras rebellion. This influx disrupted existing social relations, as the newcomers faced xenophobic abuse and stigmatization from the Old Christian population.

By the 19th century, Toledo had evolved into a bureaucratic city, a change accelerated by the arrival of the railway in 1858. This connection, promoted by the Marquis of Salamanca, fostered the development of a hospitality industry that would eventually underpin the city's modern tourism sector. Today, Toledo is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as the capital of the autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha and balancing its historic identity with its role as a modern administrative and educational hub.
