From Kraków's school clubs to Olympic silver: the rise of Tomasz Fornal
In short: Few athletes master the transition from youth prodigy to global icon as seamlessly as Tomasz Fornal. A cornerstone of the Polish national volleyball team, his journey through Europe's elite leagues reveals a relentless pursuit of championship gold and individual distinction.
Born on August 31, 1997, Tomasz Fornal’s foundation in volleyball was laid in Kraków, where he began playing for the 22 UKS club at Elementary School No. 155. His early development saw him progress through the Hutnik Dobry Wynik club and the PGE Skra Bełchatów youth squad, where he earned a bronze medal at the Polish Junior Championships.
Fornal's professional ascent began in 2016 with his PlusLiga debut at Czarni Radom. He later joined Jastrzębski Węgiel in 2019, a period marked by significant domestic success, including the 2020–21 Polish Championship and multiple Polish SuperCup titles. His career also took him abroad to Turkey, where he played for Ziraat Bankası S.K. in 2025, securing the Efeler Ligi Turkish championship before returning to the PlusLiga with Aluron CMC in 2026.
On the international stage, Fornal has been a vital component of Poland's dominance. His trophy cabinet includes U19 European and World titles in 2015, and U21 World Championship gold in 2017. More recently, he helped Poland secure gold at the 2023 Nations League and the 2023 European Championship. His individual accolades are equally impressive, earning titles such as Best Outside Spiker at the 2024 Nations League and Most Valuable Player at the 2026 Nations League.
Beyond the court, Fornal's impact is recognized through civic honors, such as receiving the Knight's Cross of Polonia Restituta in 2024. His lineage in the sport is also notable; his father, Marek, was a two-time Polish Champion in the late 1980s.
