From Polish academy prodigy to a twenty million euro Bundesliga star
In short: In just a few years, Jakub Kamiński has traversed the footballing landscape from the Lech Poznań academy to the heights of the Primeira Liga. His rapid ascent through Europe's top leagues offers a masterclass in professional progression and clinical finishing.
Jakub Piotr Kamiński’s journey began in the youth ranks of Szombierki Bytom before he joined the prestigious Lech Poznań academy in 2015. His transition to senior football was swift; by early 2019, manager Adam Nawałka integrated him into the first-team roster. He made his Ekstraklasa debut on 20 September 2019, appearing in the starting line-up during a 1–1 draw against Jagiellonia Białystok.
The period between 2020 and 2022 marked a significant breakthrough. After scoring his first league goal against Zagłębie Lubin in June 2020, Kamiński found success on the European stage, netting against Hammarby IF in the Europa League qualifying rounds in September 2020. His domestic dominance was cemented during the 2021–22 season, where he helped Lech Poznań secure the championship during the club's centenary year. His individual performances earned him the Ekstraklasa Young Player of the Season title, alongside several monthly accolades.
International and international transfers followed his domestic success. After debuting for the Polish senior squad in a 7–1 victory over San Marino in September 2021, he moved to the Bundesliga. He initially signed a five-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg in January 2022, a deal that became effective in July 2022. Following a loan spell at 1. FC Köln—where Köln eventually secured his services permanently for €5.5 million in May 2026—Kamiński reached a new valuation. In July 2026, Benfica announced his signing for a reported fee of €20 million.
