The 93-yard run that rewrote the NFL record books
In short: In 2013, a quarterback achieved something no other player in history had ever done: a 93-yard touchdown run. Terrelle Pryor possessed a rare, explosive athleticism that made him a phenomenon in high school and college, but his professional journey was a volatile mix of record-breaking brilliance and sudden controversy.
Terrelle Pryor’s ascent began in Pennsylvania, where he was a dual-sport phenom. At Jeannette High School, he became the first player in state history to record both 4,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards in a single season. His physical profile—6 feet 4 inches and incredibly fast—drew comparisons to legends like Vince Young. By 2008, he was the nation's top football prospect and a highly recruited basketball player, eventually choosing to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
His collegiate career at Ohio State was a study in extremes. While he led the Buckeyes to two Big Ten championships and earned Rose Bowl MVP honors in 2010, his tenure was marred by scandal. In December 2010, the NCAA suspended Pryor and several teammates for five games following allegations of selling memorabilia. These investigations, coupled with other personal controversies, led to his withdrawal from the university in 2011, making him eligible for the NFL's supplemental draft.
In the NFL, Pryor's career was defined by flashes of unmatched potential. Drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2011, he famously broke the Raiders' rushing record for a quarterback, surpassing a mark held by Hall of Famer Rich Gannon. Most notably, during a Week 8 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he executed a 93-yard touchdown run—the longest run by a quarterback in NFL history and the longest run by any player in Raiders history. Despite these historic moments, his career later transitioned from quarterback to wide receiver as he moved through various teams, including the Seahawks, Bengals, and Browns.
