In short: NFL scouts often overlook players who don't fit the physical mold. But Brian Westbrook used versatility to shatter NCAA records and become a cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles offense, proving that explosive skill can overcome doubts about size and pedigree.

Before entering the NFL, Westbrook established himself as one of the most prolific players in college football history. Playing for the Villanova Wildcats from 1997 to 2001, he set an NCAA record with 9,512 all-purpose yards, surpassing the 9,301 yards previously held by Brian Shay. His 1998 season was particularly historic, as he became the first player at any level of college football to record both 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single campaign.

Despite his dominance, the 2002 NFL draft was a period of hesitation for many teams. Scouts questioned Westbrook's 5'8

>200 lb (91 kg) frame, his history of injuries—including a lost college season due to a knee injury—and the fact that he played for an NCAA Division I-AA school. Andy Reid, the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach, identified his promise, choosing him via the third round at pick 91.

Westbrook's professional career was defined by dual-threat capabilities. During 2004, his 73 catches for 703 yards topped the receiving stats for all NFL running backs. By 2007, he led the league in yards from scrimmage with 2,104 yards. He became one of only seven players in NFL history to achieve the rare feat of rushing for 30 touchdowns and catching 25. While injuries eventually hampered his later years, including a difficult 2008-2009 period marked by concussions, his impact on the Eagles' offense remains legendary, earning him inductions into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Eagles Hall of Fame.
