In short: Founded in 1956, the Touchdown Club of Columbus was a powerhouse of recognition. From collegiate MVPs to NFL legends, its trophies immortalized the era's greatest athletes. But without a title sponsor, this storied institution faced a sudden, quiet end in 2020.

Established in 1956 by Sam B. Nicola, the club was born from a suggestion by James A. Rhodes, who served as Ohio state auditor at the time and later became governor. For decades, the club operated as a premier arbiter of excellence in American football, issuing awards that spanned from high school standouts to professional legends. Its leadership remained stable for decades, with Nicola serving as president until his death in 1993, followed by his son, Sam Nicola Jr.

The club's reach was vast, covering nearly every facet of the game. It honored collegiate superstars through awards like the Archie Griffin Award for most valuable player and the Sammy Baugh Trophy for top passers. It even extended its influence to the professional ranks with the Paul Brown trophy for NFL Coach of the Year and the Joseph Carr trophy for NFL Player of the Year, which was presented annually between 1955 and 1981.

However, the prestige of these accolades was ultimately tied to financial sustainability. On January 22, 2020, club president Curt Boster announced the cancellation of the awards via Facebook, citing the difficulty of maintaining the event without a title sponsor. This marked the end of an era for a club that had once recognized diverse talents, including Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison and various high school and collegiate stars.

The club's legacy is preserved in the names of its trophies, many of which honored Ohio State legends like Woody Hayes, Jim Parker, and Bill Willis. These awards provided a structured way to celebrate the evolution of the sport, from the early days of the American Football League to the modern era of collegiate dominance.
