From record-breaking college quarterback to NFL assistant: the career of Trace McSorley
In short: Trace McSorley redefined Penn State football, setting multiple school records before navigating a professional career across several NFL franchises. Beyond his athletic achievements, he became a cultural phenomenon through a viral TikTok trend. Today, he channels his extensive experience into coaching, marking a new chapter in his football journey.
Born in 1995, Trace McSorley emerged as a standout talent at Briar Woods High School in Virginia, where he secured three consecutive state championships. His collegiate career at Penn State was defined by a rapid ascent. After stepping in during the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl, he secured the starting role and led the Nittany Lions to a Big Ten Championship. By the end of 2016, he held school records for single-season passing yards, total yards, and touchdowns, even appearing on Heisman ballots.
McSorley’s collegiate tenure was marked by resilience and versatility. He finished his final season in 2018 with 2,530 passing yards and 798 rushing yards. His athletic profile was further highlighted at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, where he recorded a quarterback-best 4.57-second 40-yard dash. Despite his collegiate success, his professional path was characterized by movement across various organizations, including the Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Washington Commanders.
The transition from player to coach reflects a full-circle moment for McSorley. After his playing career, he returned to Penn State as an assistant quarterbacks coach in February 2025. By February 2026, he joined the Buffalo Bills as an offensive assistant under Joe Brady. This move reunited him with Brady, who had served as a graduate assistant during McSorley’s early years at Penn State. Today, McSorley remains a notable figure, remembered as much for his on-field records as for the unexpected viral fame that followed his collegiate success.
