From Penn State standout to Super Bowl champion: the rapid rise of Jahan Dotson
In short: After a record-breaking collegiate career, Jahan Dotson transitioned from a high-profile draft pick to a vital piece of a championship roster. His journey through the NFL involves strategic trades, significant contract shifts, and a defining moment on the game's biggest stage.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 22, 2000, Dotson emerged as a dominant force in college football. While he initially committed to play for UCLA, he eventually chose Penn State. During his time with the Nittany Lions, he rewrote the record books, specifically breaking Deon Butler's single-game receiving yardage record during a 242-yard performance against Maryland in 2021. By the end of his collegiate tenure, he held several prestigious marks, including second place in school history for both single-season and career receptions.
Dotson entered the professional ranks in 2022 when the Washington Commanders selected him with the 16th overall pick in the first round. His rookie season was marked by immediate impact and physical setbacks; despite a hamstring injury that sidelined him for five games, he earned two Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Century awards. His early career was defined by high-value contracts, including a four-year, $15 million rookie deal signed in May 2022.
The landscape of Dotson's career shifted significantly in August 2024, when the Commanders traded him, along with a fifth-round pick, to the Philadelphia Eagles. This move proved fruitful, as he became a Super Bowl champion during the 2024 season. In Super Bowl LIX, Dotson played a pivotal role in the Eagles' 40–22 victory over the Chiefs. Although a 27-yard reception was ruled short of the goal line after a booth review, the play set up a touchdown run by Jalen Hurts, marking the game's opening score. Following his championship run, Dotson moved to the Atlanta Falcons in March 2026 on a two-year, $15 million contract.
