In short: From the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation to NFL stardom, Tucker Kraft’s journey is defined by resilience. After a dominant high school career in South Dakota, the Green Bay Packers tight end rose through the collegiate ranks to become a professional standout, all while maintaining a profound, visible connection to his tribal roots.

Tucker Kraft’s rise through the ranks of professional football began far from the bright lights of the NFL. Growing up on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation, Kraft developed a versatile skill set at Timber Lake High School, where he played running back, linebacker, and punter. His senior year performance was particularly dominant, as he rushed for 1,405 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning first-team All-State honors. His early athletic versatility was evident as he balanced roles as a middle linebacker and punter. This foundation in South Dakota helped him decide to play for the Jackrabbits rather than accepting an offer from Wyoming.

After committing to South Dakota State, Kraft’s collegiate career saw him overcome the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed his spring 2021 season. By his redshirt sophomore year, he had become a consensus FCS All-American, starting all 15 games and recording 65 receptions for 780 yards. His talent was recognized globally when the Green Bay Packers selected him 78th overall in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. His professional ascent included a significant milestone when he signed his initial rookie contract on May 17, 2023. During his debut season, he appeared in all 17 games and achieved his first NFL touchdown against the Lions.

Beyond the field, Kraft maintains a deep bond with his community. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe granted him honorary membership in April 2024 to recognise his community contributions. He honors this heritage on the field by wearing the tribal flag on his helmet alongside the American flag. Even as he faced significant professional hurdles—including a torn pectoral muscle in May 2024 and a season-ending ACL tear in late 2025—his impact on the game and his community remains a central part of his story. In 2025, he used the NFL's My Cause, My Cleats program to advocate for tribal youth facing poverty. His professional value was further cemented on September 12, 2026, when he signed a massive four-year, $75 million contract extension.
