In short: Born into a prolific television family, Troian Bellisario emerged as a multifaceted talent. While widely recognized for her role in Pretty Little Liars, her career spans writing, directing, and producing. Her journey reflects a complex navigation of perfectionism, personal health challenges, and a commitment to authentic, self-authored storytelling.

Born in Los Angeles on October 28, 1985, to producers Donald P. Bellisario and Deborah Pratt, Troian Bellisario grew up immersed in the industry. Her father, known for creating series like Magnum, P.I. and NCIS, cast her in her debut role at age three in the 1988 film Last Rites. Despite this early exposure, her path was not linear. She attended the rigorous Campbell Hall School, where she excelled academically but struggled with intense pressure to maintain perfection, leading to personal battles with self-harm and an eating disorder during her teenage years.

These experiences profoundly shaped her creative output. After a brief stint at Vassar College, which she left to prioritize her mental health, she graduated from the University of Southern California in 2009. Her breakthrough arrived that same year when she was cast as Spencer Hastings in Pretty Little Liars. Beyond acting, Bellisario sought creative agency; she wrote, produced, and starred in the 2017 feature film Feed, a project directly informed by her own history with eating disorders. She also directed an episode of Pretty Little Liars in 2016, becoming one of the first cast members to do so.

Bellisario’s professional and personal lives often intersect. She met actor Patrick J. Adams in 2009, and the couple married in 2016. They have collaborated on various projects, including the short film We Are Here and the series Suits. Their life together has been marked by unconventional moments, including the birth of their second child in a car in a hospital parking lot, with Adams delivering the baby. Today, Bellisario continues to balance acting, such as her role in the 2025 series On Call, with her ongoing work as a filmmaker.
