From five-star recruit to NFL starter, the rapid rise of cornerback Tyson Campbell.
In short: Born in 2000, Tyson Campbell evolved from a highly touted Florida high school prospect into a cornerstone NFL defensive back. After a standout collegiate career at Georgia, he navigated coaching changes, injuries, and high-stakes contract negotiations to become a key professional starter, eventually joining the Cleveland Browns in 2025.
Tyson Malik Campbell emerged as a elite defensive prospect at American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida, where he earned a five-star rating. His collegiate journey at the University of Georgia saw him transition from a freshman starter in 2018 to a sophomore hampered by injury. By January 2021, Campbell opted to bypass his senior year to enter the NFL draft, where he was selected 33rd overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
His professional trajectory was defined by rapid adaptation. Initially competing for a nickelback role, Campbell was elevated to a starting cornerback position early in his 2021 rookie season following a trade. His performance metrics fluctuated; while he earned a strong 82.1 overall rating from Pro Football Focus during his 2022 campaign—placing him among the league's top-tier cornerbacks—his subsequent seasons were frequently interrupted by hamstring and quadriceps injuries that limited his availability.
The financial stakes of his career grew significantly alongside his on-field responsibilities. After signing an initial four-year deal worth roughly $9 million in 2021, Campbell secured a substantial four-year extension in July 2024 valued at $76.5 million. This contract underscored his value to the Jaguars' defense under head coach Doug Pederson. However, the tenure was short-lived; in October 2025, Campbell was traded to the Cleveland Browns in a deal involving Greg Newsome II, marking a new chapter in his professional journey.
