The prototype tackle who dominated the NFL for fourteen seasons
In short: Before he was a professional icon, Tyron Smith was a track and field standout with a massive physical toolkit. From a top-ranked recruit to the highest-paid offensive lineman in the league, his career was defined by an era of dominance in Dallas.
Tyron Smith’s ascent to NFL stardom began long before his 2011 draft debut. A standout at Rancho Verde High School in California, Smith was not only a dominant force on the offensive and defensive lines but also a formidable athlete in track and field, recording shot put distances of 14.23 meters and discus throws of 46.62 meters. By the time he reached the USC Trojans, he was recognized as a premier talent, earning the Morris Trophy in 2010 as the best lineman on the West Coast.
When the Dallas Cowboys selected him ninth overall in the 2011 NFL draft, Smith represented a significant investment. He was the first offensive lineman taken in the first round by the franchise since Jerry Jones acquired the team in 1989. His impact was immediate; as a 20-year-old rookie, he secured a starting role at right tackle and earned a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team.
Smith’s career was a masterclass in consistency and elite performance, marked by eight Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors. He was a cornerstone of the 2010s All-Decade Team, helping drive legendary rushing performances for players like DeMarco Murray and Ezekiel Elliott. Despite facing significant physical hurdles—including neck surgery in 2020 and various hamstring and ankle injuries—he maintained his status as one of the league's premier tackles. After 14 seasons, including a final stint with the New York Jets, Smith signed a one-day contract on April 15, 2025, to officially retire as a member of the Cowboys.
