In short: In 2002, Udonis Haslem went undrafted because he was considered too small for a forward. After a stint in France where he dropped 50 pounds, he joined the Miami Heat, eventually becoming one of only three players in NBA history to spend 20 years with a single franchise.

Haslem's journey to NBA stardom was anything but linear. After being overlooked in the 2002 NBA draft due to his 6 ft 6 in stature, he traveled to France to play for Chalon-sur-Saône. There, he underwent a physical transformation, losing nearly 50 pounds in just eight months while averaging 16.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Returning to his hometown in 2003, Haslem signed with the Miami Heat and began a two-decade tenure defined by loyalty and championship success. He secured three NBA titles in 2006, 2012, and 2013. Notably, he became the first undrafted player in league history to lead an NBA franchise in rebounding, surpassing Alonzo Mourning's record of 4,807 in November 2012.

As his playing years waned, Haslem transitioned into a 'player-coach' role, mentoring younger players while remaining an active part of the roster. He continued to break records late into his career, becoming the oldest person to play in the NBA Finals at age 42 years and 363 days during the 2023 postseason. Following his retirement, he transitioned into executive and media roles, serving as the Heat's vice president of basketball development.

His career was not without controversy. During his high school years, an investigation revealed that Haslem and teammates had circumvented residency requirements by using an efficiency apartment as an official address, leading Miami High to forfeit its 1998 state title. Later, he faced legal challenges as a spokesperson for the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, eventually settling a class-action lawsuit regarding the promotion of unregistered securities.
