The two-footed maestro who defied age to become a Celtic hero
In short: When 33-year-old Ľubomír Moravčík arrived at Celtic in 1998, many doubted his impact. Yet, the Slovak midfielder's technical brilliance and ability to strike with either foot transformed the club, proving that elite creativity knows no expiration date.
Born on 22 June 1965, Moravčík rose through the ranks of Plastika Nitra, making his professional debut on 16 October 1983. His technical mastery was defined by a rare, ambidextrous precision; through targeted training, he reached a level where he could pass and kick with both feet without distinction, even if he preferred leading the ball with his right. He made his professional debut against FK Teplice. This early success eventually led him to represent Czechoslovakia at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
This unique skill set left even teammates puzzled. His former partner at Celtic, Henrik Larsson, famously remarked that he still could not tell if Moravčík was right-footed or left-footed. This technical elegance helped him secure the 1992 Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year title and earned him plaudits from stars like Pavel Nedvěd. His international career included 42 appearances for Czechoslovakia and 38 for Slovakia.
Moravčík's career spanned several continents, including stints in France with Saint-Étienne and Bastia, Germany with MSV Duisburg, and Japan with JEF United Ichihara. His time in Scotland was particularly storied. Joining Celtic for £330,000 in October 1998 under manager Jozef Vengloš, he formed a legendary partnership with Larsson and won two Scottish Premier League titles. During his tenure at Parkhead, he secured one Scottish Cup and two Scottish League Cups. He ultimately moved to the J-League in 2002.
Beyond the pitch, Moravčík holds an engineering degree from the Slovak University of Agriculture, a feat he achieved while playing for Nitra. He reflected that during the communist era, athletes often received individual study plans and concessions to balance education with professional sports, a balance he considers a necessary minimum for any professional athlete. He has also served as the vice-president of the Slovak Football Association. Additionally, he has held coaching roles for the Slovak U-17 national team.
