The Ukrainian Insurgent Army: A Complex Legacy of Guerrilla Warfare and Ethnic Violence
In short: Formed in 1942 to secure an independent Ukrainian state, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army waged a multifaceted war against Soviet, Polish, and German forces. While celebrated by some as national heroes, their history is deeply stained by the systematic massacre of tens of thousands of Polish civilians during the Second World War.
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army, or UPA, emerged in October 1942 as the armed wing of a radical nationalist organization. Its primary objective was the creation of a sovereign Ukrainian state through a revolutionary dictatorship. Operating as a decentralized guerrilla force, the UPA navigated a shifting landscape of shifting alliances, initially fighting both German occupiers and Soviet partisans before entering a tactical collaboration with Nazi Germany by late 1944 to counter the advancing Soviet Union.
The most harrowing chapter of the UPA’s history involves the ethnic cleansing of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. Beginning in 1943, leadership within the organization ordered the mass killing of the Polish population in these regions. These operations were marked by extreme brutality, with historians estimating that between 60,000 and 120,000 Polish civilians were murdered. The Polish government officially recognizes these events as a genocide, a designation that remains a significant point of contention and historical debate between the two nations.
Following the end of the war, the UPA continued its resistance against Soviet authorities well into the 1950s, with its final military engagement occurring in 1956. Today, the UPA’s legacy remains sharply divided. Many in Ukraine view its members as freedom fighters who resisted totalitarian regimes, while others, including Soviet veterans and Polish historians, emphasize the group's role in atrocities. In 2019, the Ukrainian government officially recognized surviving members as veterans, reflecting the ongoing, complex struggle to reconcile the UPA’s role in the fight for independence with its violent past.
