Why a jazz-inspired expansion team traded New Orleans for the Salt Lake City desert
In short: Born from the spirit of collective improvisation, the Utah Jazz began as a struggling New Orleans expansion franchise. Facing venue crises and financial instability, the team eventually relocated to Utah, where a legendary duo would transform them from league underdogs into a 1990s powerhouse.
The franchise entered the NBA during the 1974–75 season as the New Orleans Jazz, a name chosen to honor the cultural roots of jazz music and its definition of collective improvisation. In their early years, the team struggled with significant logistical hurdles. In New Orleans, they faced venue issues so severe that the NBA Players Association required a safety net around the court at the Municipal Auditorium to prevent players from falling into the stands. They also contended with a high 11% amusement tax and the need to travel for a month each year due to Mardi Gras festivities.
Financial instability nearly ended the franchise. In 1983, management resorted to playing games in Las Vegas to boost profitability. By 1986, owner Sam Battistone was facing a cash shortage and was approached by investors who intended to move the team to Minneapolis. However, Larry H. Miller intervened, purchasing the remaining 50% of the team for $14 million and ensuring the franchise remained in Utah.
The team's fortunes shifted dramatically in the late 1980s. Following the arrival of head coach Jerry Sloan in 1988, the Jazz became a perennial powerhouse. This era was defined by the legendary pick-and-roll partnership of John Stockton and Karl Malone. While the duo led the team to two NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, they were ultimately thwarted by the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls in both instances. The team has since undergone multiple eras of rebuilding, from the post-Stockton/Malone years to the recent rise of stars like Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.
