The long, winding road to the return of Texas Valley football
In short: After decades of dormancy and shifting conference alliances, a football program is finally returning to the Southland Conference. The story of the UTRGV Vaqueros is not just about a new team, but the resurrection of a legacy that dates back nearly a century.
The modern UTRGV Vaqueros football program is a revival of a lineage that began in 1927 as Edinburg College. Originally a junior college, the team—then known as the Broncs—was born from a naming contest. Under head coach J. D. Foster, the early squad struggled, managing a 4–2–3 record that included a tie against the Southwest Texas State Bobcats' reserve team. Following four seasons of failing to secure more than four wins in a single year, the program was shuttered.
A brief resurrection occurred in 1947 under coach Bobby Cannon, who implemented a 'shot-punt football system' within the South Texas Junior College Conference. However, this era also ended after just four seasons when the school board discontinued the program. For decades, the idea of football remained dormant through the evolution of the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA) and its eventual 2015 merger with the University of Texas at Brownsville to form UTRGV.
The path to the 2025 season has been marked by significant administrative and structural shifts. While initial plans in 2021 suggested a move to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), complex conference realignments involving the Southland Conference and the formation of the United Athletic Conference (UAC) redirected the program's trajectory. Ultimately, UTRGV announced its move to the Southland Conference in March 2024, without ever competing in the UAC.
Today, the program is led by coach Travis Bush, who was hired in December 2022. The team is preparing for an exhibition schedule in 2024 before officially entering NCAA Division I FCS play in 2025. The Vaqueros will split their presence between Brownsville and Edinburg, primarily playing at the Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium—formerly H-E-B Park—with an annual game hosted at Sams Memorial Stadium.
