The club that survived on the lowest points total in history
In short: In 2022, Salernitana achieved a statistical anomaly that defied the logic of professional football. Despite enduring a disastrous campaign, they managed to secure their top-flight status by finishing with the absolute minimum number of points ever recorded in the history of Serie A.
The club's journey to this historic survival is a narrative of rebirth. Originally founded in 1919 as Unione Sportiva Salernitana, the team faced a series of identities and crises. It underwent three reconstitutions, most notably in 2005 after a bankruptcy and again in 2011 following an exclusion from Italian football. The current iteration, US Salernitana 1919, began its climb from the fourth tier, Serie D, in the 2011–12 season.
The 2020–21 season marked a turning point, as the club secured promotion to Serie A for the first time in 23 years. However, the transition to the elite level was fraught with difficulty. During the 2021–22 season, the team struggled significantly, finding themselves at the bottom of the table. Despite the immense pressure, they managed a remarkable 'great escape,' gathering 18 points over their final 15 matches to stay afloat.
This feat remains a unique footnote in Italian football history because they finished with just 31 points—the fewest points ever tallied by a team in Serie A. While the club has since faced further relegations, including a drop to Serie C in 2024–25 after a playoff loss to Sampdoria, their 2022 survival stands as a testament to resilience in the face of statistical impossibility.
The club's visual identity also reflects its deep roots in the Campania region. While they originally wore light blue and white to honor the Gulf of Salerno, they shifted to garnet colors in the 1940s. This change earned them the nickname 'granata,' a color they have reclaimed as their primary home identity since the 2011 refoundation.
