From military school equestrian to international stardom and musical success
In short: Before becoming a fixture in Mexican television and film, Vadhir Derbez was training at a military academy. Today, the actor and singer has transitioned from his early roles in sketches to leading roles in major Netflix series and Broadway musicals, carving out a multifaceted career far beyond his famous lineage.
Born in Mexico City on February 18, 1991, Vadhir Derbez Alejandro González Torres entered the entertainment industry at just six years old. His early career was defined by appearances on programs like Derbez en Cuando and various sketches, leading to his first significant role in the 2002 novela Cómplices Al Rescate. This foundation in television allowed him to eventually move into diverse formats, including reality competitions and major international productions.
His versatility is evidenced by his ability to pivot between genres. In 2010, he won the first season of Univision's reality dance competition, Mira Quien Baila. He has also ventured into high-stakes drama, such as his role as Maximiliano 'Max' Zaga in the 2013 series Gossip Girl: Acapulco, and entered the international streaming market with a role in the Netflix series Sense8 in 2016. His acting range extends to the stage, where he has performed in musical productions like Grease and the Broadway musical Rock of Ages.
Beyond acting, Derbez has established a presence in the music industry. He released his first EP, titled Vadhir Derbez, on September 2, 2016, featuring singles such as 'Te Olvidé' and 'Me Haces Sentir'. His musical and cinematic paths often intersect, as seen with his 2017 release 'Latin Lover' and his work on the soundtrack for the film 3 Idiotas. Whether in film, music, or theater, his career reflects a continuous expansion into new creative territories.
