The slapstick king who conquered the internet through memes
In short: He was once the undisputed king of Tamil comedy, known for playing the mistreated underdog. Though his film career faced bans and periods of dormancy, his expressive face found a second, unexpected life as a global icon of internet subculture and viral memes.
Born Kumaravadivel Natarajan in 1960, the actor known as Vadivelu began his career far from the spotlight, working in his father's glass-cutting business. His path to stardom began in 1988 with a small role in T. Rajendar's En Thangai Kalyani. A chance encounter on a train with actor Rajkiran helped secure him a role in the 1991 film En Rasavin Manasile, marking the start of a legendary comedic era in Tamil cinema. Before his cinematic debut, he honed his comedic timing through local stage plays. He also shared his professional life with his brothers, including Jagatheeshwaran, who appeared in the 2002 film Kadhal Azhivathillai.
During his peak between 1998 and 2008, Vadivelu became a powerhouse of the industry, earning numerous Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. His comedy often relied on self-deprecation and a specific persona: a 'subaltern rogue' who is frequently the victim of slapstick violence and ridicule. This character type, often playing a clownish version of a gang leader, allowed audiences to connect deeply with his rustic appearance and accent. His filmography is vast, boasting at least 290 credits and two Filmfare Award South wins. He even ventured into music, making his singing debut in 1995 with the track 'Ettanaa Irundha'.
His career has been marked by significant turbulence, including a period of industry-imposed bans following creative disputes with directors like Chimbu Deven. However, his resurgence was fueled by the digital age. In 2019, he became the center of the massive 'Pray for Nesamani' viral trend. While his lead roles have fluctuated, his recent work, such as the 2023 film Maamannan, has brought renewed critical attention to the social nuances of his performances. The actor's influence extends to film titles, which are often inspired by his famous dialogues. Even as he navigates new projects like the 2025 film Gangers, his presence remains a cultural cornerstone.
