In short: Born in Tonga, Vai Sikahema became the first Tongan to play in the NFL. His path to professional football was defined by deep faith, family sacrifice, and a relentless work ethic. Beyond the gridiron, he built a successful career in broadcasting while remaining a dedicated leader in his church.

Born in 1962 in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, Sikahema’s early life was shaped by his family's commitment to their faith. When he was five, his family traveled to New Zealand to be sealed in the Hamilton Temple, a journey that required them to work for three months to afford the trip home. His parents later pursued education in Hawaii, leaving Sikahema in Tonga until they could earn enough to reunite the family in the United States. Settling in Mesa, Arizona, Sikahema excelled in high school football before enrolling at Brigham Young University in 1980.

Sikahema’s college career was marked by a two-year hiatus to serve as a missionary in South Dakota. Upon his return, he helped the BYU Cougars secure the 1984 National Championship. By the end of his senior year, he held the NCAA record for career punt returns with 153. In 1986, he was drafted into the NFL, playing eight seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, and Philadelphia Eagles. He earned two Pro Bowl selections during his professional tenure, which concluded in 1993.

Following his retirement from football, Sikahema transitioned into a prominent broadcasting career in Philadelphia, serving as a sports director and anchor for over two decades. His work earned him two Emmy Awards and induction into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame. Throughout his life, he has balanced his professional achievements with significant religious service, including roles as a bishop, stake president, and, as of 2021, a general authority seventy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He remains a vocal advocate for his community and faith, having played a central role in the development of the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple.
