From NHL buyout to Stanley Cup champion: the turbulent career of Valeri Nichushkin
In short: Valeri Nichushkin’s path through the NHL is a study in volatility. After being bought out by the Dallas Stars following a scoreless season, he reinvented himself as a defensive powerhouse with the Colorado Avalanche, eventually securing a Stanley Cup and a massive contract extension before facing repeated personal and professional setbacks.
Born on March 4, 1995, Valeri Nichushkin was selected 10th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2013 NHL entry draft. His early career was marked by promise, followed by significant physical hurdles, including hip surgery in 2014. By 2016, contract disputes led him back to the KHL with CSKA Moscow. His return to Dallas in 2018 proved difficult; he failed to score a single goal during the 2018–19 campaign, leading to the team buying out his contract in June 2019.
Nichushkin’s career trajectory shifted dramatically when he signed with the Colorado Avalanche in August 2019. Analytics experts praised his defensive metrics, and he finished eighth in voting for the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2020. This defensive reliability evolved into offensive production, culminating in a 52-point season and a 2022 Stanley Cup victory. During that championship run, he tied a franchise record with four goals in the final series, earning him an eight-year, $49 million contract extension.
Despite this success, Nichushkin’s tenure in Colorado faced recurring instability. In 2023, he stepped away during the playoffs following an incident at a Seattle hotel. In 2024, he entered the NHL/NHLPA Assistance Program twice, the second time resulting in a six-month suspension for violating program terms. After a productive return, including a 2025 regular-season hat trick and a 2026 car accident, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in June 2026. His journey illustrates the thin line between elite performance and the profound personal challenges that can define a professional athlete's career.
The narrative of Nichushkin is complex, oscillating between high-level defensive utility and periods of absence. While his on-ice impact—particularly his defensive goals above replacement—has been statistically significant, his career remains defined by the unpredictability of his availability and the high-stakes nature of professional sports recovery programs.
