In short: In 1981, Valdosta State University was a school without a football team. Following a student vote to increase fees, the program was born, eventually evolving into a powerhouse that has secured four national championships and a legendary winning streak.

The program's origins trace back to an early morning meeting in 1981, convened by President Hugh C. Bailey. Alongside leaders like Sam Brooks and Billy Grant, the university moved quickly to field a varsity team, driven by a student mandate to increase fees to fund the new program. Under head coach Jim Goodman, the Blazers debuted in 1982 with a 5–5–1 record.

The program's ascent to national prominence was marked by several eras of dominance. In the 1990s, the team achieved its first national tournament appearance in 1994, led by quarterback Chris Hatcher, who also won the Harlon Hill Trophy. By 1996, under coach Mumme, the Blazers secured their first Gulf South Conference championship and reached the playoff quarterfinals.

The 'Hatch-Attack' era under Hatcher (2000–2006) cemented the school's status as a contender. Hatcher left with a .864 winning percentage, the highest in school history, after securing a national title in 2004. This success continued through the tenure of David Dean, who became the only coach in program history to win two national championships (2007 and 2012).

The Blazers' dominance is further evidenced by their record in the NCAA Division II playoffs, where they hold a 34–17 record across 21 appearances. Their most recent championship came in 2018, a season in which they went undefeated at 14–0, averaging 52 points per game and scoring a total of 728 points.
